Description

The Piano Touch is an rf touch switch built around a tempered glass panel and a 433 MHz radio, which means it works with no hub, no app and no internet connection at all. Press the panel, or press a paired RF remote from another room. It is the switch we fit where reliability matters more than app control, and where the wiring will not support a second switch position.

Why choose an rf touch switch

RF433 is a short range radio band governed by ETSI EN 300 220, and its practical advantage over Wi-Fi is penetration: 433 MHz passes through concrete and interior walls far better than 2.4 GHz. There is no cloud account, no firmware that stops being supported, and nothing to reconfigure when you change router. The trade-off is no remote access from outside the property and no voice control. Our guide to smart home protocols sets out when that trade is worth making.

Key features

  • Tempered glass panel with LED indicators, rated for 5 million presses
  • RF433 control, no hub or gateway needed
  • 110 to 240V, suitable for most lighting circuits
  • Available in 1, 2 and 3 gang
  • Pairs with handheld and wall-mounted RF remotes
  • Fits a standard wall back box
  • Flame-retardant housing

Wiring requirements

A live and neutral connection is required at the back box. Check for a spare conductor, usually blue, before ordering, because many older buildings were wired with live and switched live only. Where there is no neutral, the circuit needs re-pulling or an alternative control method. Our installation team can confirm on site.

Two-way and three-way control without new cable

This is where an rf touch switch earns its place. Several remotes can be paired to one switch, and one remote can drive several switches, so a second or third control point costs a remote rather than a wall chase. In renovation work on finished walls, that difference is the whole job.

Frequently asked questions

Can I control it from my phone?
Not on its own. RF433 is deliberately local, which is what makes it hub-free and resilient. If app control is a requirement, our Wi-Fi touch switches cover that.

How many remotes can one switch take?
Multiple, and one remote can control multiple switches. This is how two-way and three-way control is built without pulling new cable.

Does it work during an internet outage?
Completely, because it never used the internet. It needs mains power only.

Where an rf touch switch is the right choice

We specify this switch in three situations. In renovation work where the walls are finished and a second control point would mean chasing plaster, an rf touch switch plus a remote solves the problem in an afternoon. In properties with unreliable internet, where anything cloud-dependent becomes a source of complaints. And in rental units and short-term lets, where a switch that needs an app account handed over to each guest is a liability rather than a feature.

Panel life and finish

The 5 million press rating matters more than it appears. A hallway or kitchen switch is operated many times a day for decades, and cheap capacitive panels degrade at the corners first, where fingers land. Tempered glass with a rated panel life is what separates a switch that still looks new after five years from one that has to be replaced. The LED indicators are visible in a dark room without lighting it, which is the small detail people notice most once the switch is fitted.
