Why six periods a day matters
Most basic thermostats give you two periods, on and off, which forces a compromise between comfort and cost. Six lets the schedule follow how a home is actually used: warm at breakfast, off through the working day, up again before anyone returns, down overnight, different at weekends. On a slow system like underfloor heating that granularity is what closes the gap between a comfortable house and an expensive one. Protection features

Below 5 degrees the thermostat calls for heat regardless of schedule, which is the difference between an empty house and a burst pipe. Network requirements
Wi-Fi is 2.4 GHz, the band described in ETSI EN 300 328, and the router must be handing out DHCP addresses. The stored schedule continues to run if the connection drops. Only remote control from the app is affected.

Matching the thermostat to the boiler
A programmable thermostat drives a boiler through a simple call for heat, so the important question is what input your boiler expects: a volt-free contact, a switched live, or a proprietary bus. Volt-free and switched live are straightforward. Manufacturer-specific bus systems, such as those found on some modulating combi boilers, are not, and fitting a third-party programmable thermostat to one of those loses the modulation the boiler was designed around. Setting a schedule that actually saves money
A programmable thermostat saves money through hours, not degrees. Start by setting the occupied periods honestly, including weekends, then lower the unoccupied setpoint rather than switching off completely, because a cold house costs more to bring back up than a cool one costs to maintain. Leave anti-freeze protection enabled all season. Review the schedule once a month for the first season and it will not need touching again.
